Process crash via fatal gradient index check
Published Sep 16, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025
Reachable assertion in Google TensorFlow before 2.7.2 and in 2.8.0 and 2.9.0 allows remote attackers to crash the process via malformed tensors. FractionalMaxPoolGrad uses a fatal CHECK to validate an input-backpropagation index derived from supplied pooling sequences instead of returning an InvalidArgument error. Exploitation requires an application to pass attacker-controlled, incorrectly sized tensors to the operation and terminates that TensorFlow process, with no reported data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
