Authenticated filesystem escape via incomplete symlink validation
Published Jan 12, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2025
Symlink following in Samba 4.17.0 through 4.17.1 allows remote authenticated users to access files outside an SMB share. smbd's user-space symlink target check misses a corner case and follows an attacker-created link beyond the administrator-configured share path. Reachability requires share write access through SMB1 Unix extensions or an NFS export of the same filesystem area; SMB1 is disabled by default.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=Affects samba since 4.17.0, Fixed samba 4.17.2.
