Root privilege escalation via followed symbolic links
Published Sep 13, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in SAP Host Agent SAPOSCOL 7.22 allows local users in the sapsys group to gain root access on UNIX systems. The root saposcol service follows attacker-controlled symbolic links in its writable DIR_PERF directory when creating or appending reports and logs. Membership in sapsys and local access are required; exploitation can expose, overwrite, or change permissions on root-owned files and yield full system control.
