SYSTEM code execution via symlinked file deletion
Published Sep 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Link following in Trend Micro Security (Consumer) 17.7.1179 and earlier allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. The Anti-Malware Solution Platform service follows an attacker-created symbolic link and deletes the linked file with elevated rights. Exploitation requires local low-privileged code execution; the resulting file deletion enables privilege escalation and arbitrary code execution as SYSTEM.
