SYSTEM elevation via weak machine-certificate mapping
Published Aug 9, 2022 · Updated Jun 5, 2025
Privilege escalation in Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services allows remote authenticated users to obtain SYSTEM privileges. During certificate-based authentication, the KDC fails to account for a trailing dollar sign in machine names and permits certificates to spoof related accounts. Exploitation requires control of a computer account and access to Active Directory Certificate Services; a successful certificate authenticates with SYSTEM privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
