CVE-2022-34689Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Identity spoofing via MD5 certificate-cache collisions

Published Oct 11, 2022 · Updated Jan 2, 2025

Certificate validation in Microsoft Windows CryptoAPI allows remote attackers to spoof trusted identities with colliding certificates. CreateChainContextFromPathGraph treats matching MD5 thumbprints as certificate identity and reuses a cached trust result without comparing certificate contents. Exploitation requires an application to enable end-certificate caching and an attacker to supply both certificates; success enables authentication or code signing as the targeted identity.
