Code execution via executable-extension filename bypass
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Dangerous file handling in Mozilla Firefox before 102 allows remote attackers to plant an executable through a dragged image filename. The drag-and-drop filename sanitizer removes only one dangerous suffix, so a doubled executable extension leaves an executable filename. Exploitation requires a user to drag the crafted image to a filesystem and then launch the resulting file, which executes attacker-supplied code.
