Protocol launch to external Microsoft apps
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
URL redirection in affected Mozilla products before their fixed releases allows remote attackers to launch Microsoft protocols after a user accepts a prompt. Firefox and Thunderbird process ms-msdt, search, and search-ms links through external protocol handlers that bypass normal browser handling and deliver content to Microsoft applications. The attack requires a user to accept the protocol prompt and is limited to Windows; Mozilla reported no exploitation through Firefox or Thunderbird.
