SYSTEM privilege escalation via repair-time binary hijack
Published Sep 13, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Crestron AirMedia Windows Application 4.3.1.39 allows local users to obtain a SYSTEM command prompt. During repair, a low-privileged user can change permissions on a pre-staged file structure before the installer places a trusted service executable, enabling binary replacement. A low-privileged local account and an installer repair operation are required; successful replacement executes with SYSTEM privileges.
