Interpreter crash via invalid UTF-8 read
Published Jul 18, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Denial of service in NGINX njs 0.7.5 allows local users to crash the interpreter by executing a crafted JavaScript file. The Uint8ClampedArray.from conversion path sends a crafted string through njs_string_offset to njs_utf8_next, which performs an invalid memory read. The trigger requires control of trusted JavaScript executed by the njs CLI or loaded through js_import; upstream treats such code as protected configuration, and the demonstrated consequence is a process abort.
