SYSTEM privilege escalation via junction-followed quarantine restore
Published Jun 21, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Link-following in Comodo Antivirus 12.2.2.8012 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through a quarantine restore. The SYSTEM-level cmdagent.exe restore operation follows an attacker-created NTFS directory junction and moves a quarantined DLL into System32. A low-privileged Windows account can trigger quarantine, replace the original directory with the junction, restore the DLL, and obtain SYSTEM code execution when a privileged process loads it.
