Stored XSS via unrestricted remote SVG embedding
Published Jul 30, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Stored XSS in the Gutenberg plugin through 13.7.3 allows remote authenticated users to embed a scripted SVG through Insert from URL. The editor accepts a remote SVG URL from a Contributor and persists it as an img source without blocking the SVG document. Modern browsers do not execute SVG script in an img element or under the WordPress origin; execution requires direct opening or weakened same-origin protections and affects only the SVG origin.
