Local privilege escalation via process identity race
Published Jun 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Race condition in AWS Apache Log4j Hotpatch before 1.3.5 allows local users to execute binaries with elevated privileges. The hotpatch script reads a Java process path before its effective user ID, then trusts the mismatched observations when launching that path. Exploitation requires local permission to run custom programs and winning the race by replacing the observed process with an SUID binary, yielding root-level execution.
