Local root escalation via writable maintainer scripts
Published Jun 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Incorrect file ownership in the Checkmk agent Debian package allows local users to gain root privileges on monitored hosts. The shipped package assigns /var/lib/dpkg/info/check-mk-agent.* maintainer scripts to UID and GID 1001 instead of root, permitting that account to replace code later executed as root. Exploitation requires a local user with UID 1001 and an affected shipped Debian package; enterprise Agent Bakery packages are not affected.
