Authenticated shell command injection via Spark UI

Published Jul 18, 2022 · Updated Oct 21, 2025

Improper command neutralization in Apache Spark 3.0.3 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute shell commands via the Spark UI. HttpSecurityFilter accepts an arbitrary impersonated user name and passes attacker-controlled input into a Unix shell command during permission checking. ACLs and an authentication filter must be enabled, and commands run with the privileges of the Spark process.
