Gadget-chain execution via unsafe Customizer file deserialization
Published Oct 31, 2022 · Updated May 6, 2025
PHP object injection in OceanWP Ocean Extra before 2.0.5 allows remote authenticated users to invoke gadget-chain behavior via an imported file. The oceanwp_cp_customizer_import AJAX action passes uploaded Customizer Styling content to PHP unserialize(), reconstructing attacker-controlled objects without validating the serialized data. A high-privilege WordPress account, the OceanWP theme, and a suitable gadget chain are required; consequences depend on the available gadgets.
