CVE-2022-33070Public exploit

Service interruption via signed parser shift

Published Jun 22, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Denial of service in protobuf-c 1.4.0 allows attackers to interrupt a consuming service by supplying crafted Protocol Buffers data. The parse_tag_and_wiretype function accumulates a decoded tag byte with signed int left shifts; shifting the demonstrated value 65 by 25 positions is not representable. A consuming application must parse attacker-controlled serialized input; the published effect is limited to service interruption, with no reported data access or code execution.
