Recovery-phrase disclosure via browser session caching
Published Jun 29, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Information disclosure in MetaMask Extension before 10.11.3 allows attackers to read a secret recovery phrase from browser session data. The recovery-phrase import flow placed the BIP39 mnemonic in a single input field, allowing Firefox and Chromium session restore to persist it to disk in plaintext. Exposure requires an imported phrase on an unencrypted device, the phrase-display control enabled during import, and local or remote access to the compromised device.
