Local privilege escalation via shared-buffer TOCTOU
Published Feb 15, 2023 · Updated Mar 19, 2025
A TOCTOU race in Insyde InsydeH2O kernel 5.0 through 5.5 allows local users to escalate privileges through DMA buffer manipulation. NvmExpressDxe checks link data while it remains in a buffer shared by SMM and non-SMM code, allowing the checked data or its pointers to change before use. A successful race corrupts SMRAM; exploitation requires local privileges, DMA access, and high-complexity timing.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
