Unauthorized audio capture via insufficient sandbox restrictions

Published Dec 15, 2022 · Updated Apr 21, 2025

Improper access control in Core Bluetooth in Apple macOS before 13 allows context-dependent attackers to record paired AirPods audio. Core Bluetooth applies insufficient sandbox restrictions to third-party apps, allowing unauthorized access to audio from paired AirPods. A third-party app must execute on the Mac and AirPods must already be paired; the reported consequence is audio capture, not data modification or service interruption.
