Local privilege escalation via JPEG use-after-free
Published Jan 3, 2023 · Updated Apr 10, 2025
Incorrect buffer-size calculation in MediaTek JPEG on MT6895 and MT6983 with Android 12.0 allows local users to gain System privileges. The JPEG component miscalculates a buffer size, creating a use-after-free condition during local processing. A local attacker must already hold System execution privileges; no user interaction is required, and successful exploitation elevates privileges.
