Local privilege escalation via KeyInstall buffer overflow
Published Dec 5, 2022 · Updated Apr 24, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in MediaTek KeyInstall on Android 10.0 through 13.0 allows local users to gain elevated privileges. KeyInstall copies an input buffer without correctly checking its size, allowing the write to pass the destination boundary. Exploitation requires System execution privileges on an affected MediaTek chipset but no user interaction, and the resulting memory corruption enables local privilege escalation.
