Local privilege escalation via JPEG use-after-free
Published Nov 8, 2022 · Updated May 2, 2025
Use-after-free in MediaTek's JPEG component on Android 12.0 allows local users with System execution privileges to elevate locally. The component performs a use after free when a time-of-check/time-of-use race changes object lifetime between validation and use. The issue is limited to MT6893 and MT6895 chipsets; no user interaction is required, but an existing System-privileged context is necessary.
