SMRAM code execution via improperly validated SMI
Published Jan 18, 2023 · Updated Apr 3, 2025
Improper input validation in Dell BIOS version 1.8 allows local users to execute arbitrary code in SMRAM through a crafted SMI. Dell identifies the SMI interface as the input path but has not disclosed the handler, field, or validation operation that accepts the unsafe input. Exploitation requires authenticated, high-privilege local access and high-complexity conditions, and successful code runs inside protected SMRAM.
