Privilege escalation via IdeBusDxe shared-buffer race
Published Feb 15, 2023 · Updated Mar 19, 2025
TOCTOU race in IdeBusDxe in Insyde InsydeH2O kernel 5.0 through 5.5 allows local users to escalate privileges through DMA. IdeBusDxe shares an ACPI runtime command buffer between SMM and non-SMM code, permitting DMA to change checked data before SMM uses it. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and DMA access to that buffer, and successful exploitation corrupts SMRAM and crosses into elevated firmware execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
