Privilege escalation via shared-buffer DMA race
Published Feb 15, 2023 · Updated Mar 20, 2025
TOCTOU race condition in Insyde InsydeH2O kernel 5.0 through 5.5 allows local users to corrupt SMRAM and escalate privileges via DMA. StorageSecurityCommandDxe shares an ACPI runtime command buffer between SMM and non-SMM code, allowing DMA to alter data after validation but before use. Exploitation requires high local privileges and a DMA-capable path; successful races corrupt protected SMRAM and elevate privileges beyond the non-SMM context.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
