Privilege escalation via HddPassword DMA race
Published Feb 15, 2023 · Updated Mar 20, 2025
A TOCTOU race in the HddPassword buffer in Insyde InsydeH2O kernels 5.0 through 5.5 allows local users to escalate privileges via DMA. SMM and non-SMM code share the buffer, allowing DMA to alter its contents between validation and use and corrupt SMRAM. Exploitation requires local high-privileged access and DMA capability; successful races cross the operating-system-to-SMM trust boundary.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
