SYSTEM privilege escalation via writable symbolic-link paths
Published Jul 18, 2022 · Updated Jul 9, 2026
Link-following in AnyDesk 7.0.9 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through writable per-user trace and chat paths. AnyDesk.exe runs as SYSTEM while writing ad.trace and chat logs beneath a user-modifiable %APPDATA% tree, and it follows attacker-created symbolic links to privileged destinations. A low-privileged Windows account must replace the trace or chat path and trigger a connection or chat write, enabling arbitrary file writes that can overwrite system or security files.
