Hostname spoofing via HTTP URL protocol misclassification
Published Sep 15, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Improper input parsing in Ionică Bizău parse-url before 8.1.0 allows attackers to spoof hostnames through crafted HTTP or HTTPS URLs. The URL parser classifies certain HTTP or HTTPS inputs as SSH and can consequently return an incorrect hostname. Any application that trusts the parsed protocol or hostname for a security decision can act on attacker-controlled URL components; the upstream advisory identifies no narrower precondition.
