Authenticated message ID enumeration via regex injection
Published Sep 23, 2022 · Updated May 22, 2025
Information disclosure in Rocket.Chat before 4.7.5 and 4.8.0 through 4.8.1 allows remote authenticated users to enumerate message IDs. The getReadReceipts Meteor server method forwards insufficiently filtered user input into MongoDB queries, so an injected $regex operator can probe arbitrary message identifiers. A valid low-privilege account and network access to the workspace are required; the observed consequence is message-ID disclosure rather than message content access.
