Server crash via UNION window-function ORDER BY
Published Jul 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
A query-processing flaw in MariaDB 10.2 through 10.7 allows attackers to crash the server process with a crafted UNION query. The setup_order function rejects aggregate expressions in a UNION-level ORDER BY clause but omits the equivalent window-function check, sending the query into filesort tracking. Attackers must be able to submit SQL combining UNION, a global ORDER BY clause, and a window function; successful exploitation terminates the database service.
