Local privilege escalation via unauthenticated command packets
Published Nov 28, 2022 · Updated Jul 9, 2026
Privilege escalation in MSI Center 1.0.41.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary programs as Administrator via a crafted TCP packet. The privileged MSI.TerminalServer.exe service accepts unauthenticated JSON RunSetupModule commands on localhost:26822 and resolves attacker-controlled file paths without blocking traversal. A low-privileged process can therefore start a local executable with elevated permissions; the documented proof of concept launches an Administrator command prompt.
