Unauthenticated arbitrary file read via path traversal
Published Aug 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Path traversal in muhttpd before 1.1.7 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files on Arris NVG and BGW gateways via crafted HTTP URLs. The do_request function in request.c skips the first URL character while constructing the filesystem path, allowing traversal to files outside the intended document directory. Exploitation requires an HTTP-reachable management service but no authentication; exposed devices can disclose credentials, wireless settings, connection data, and private keys without changing files or interrupting service.
