CVE-2022-31781Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Application CPU exhaustion via ContentType regex backtracking

Published Jul 13, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Regular expression denial of service in Apache Tapestry 5.8.1 and earlier allows attackers to exhaust CPU via crafted content types. The ContentType constructor applies a nested, unbounded parameter-matching group to attacker-controlled input, causing exponential backtracking. Exposure requires a non-Tapestry code path to pass outside input into the constructor, and practical reproduction requires JDK 8 or earlier.
