Memory corruption via uninitialized CMS digest pointer
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Invalid reads in Firefox before 101, Firefox ESR before 91.10, and Thunderbird before 91.10 allow attackers to crash clients via crafted CMS data. NSS_CMSDigestContext_FinishMultiple returns success without initializing its digest output when no content was seen, causing a caller to dereference stale stack data. User-triggered processing of attacker-supplied CMS data is required; observed outcomes are invalid reads and crashes, while stack grooming yields an arbitrary memory read.
