Unauthenticated code execution via traversing PAK extraction
Published Jan 25, 2023 · Updated Apr 2, 2025
Directory traversal in VMware Aria Operations for Logs 8.10.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject files and execute code. The PAK upgrade extractor accepts traversal entries in a crafted, otherwise valid upgrade archive and writes their contents outside the intended directory. The exposed Thrift service supplies the upload and extraction path without authentication; successful writes can schedule root-level command execution.
