CVE-2022-31705

Host code execution via EHCI out-of-bounds write

Published Dec 14, 2022 · Updated Apr 18, 2025

An EHCI heap out-of-bounds write in VMware ESXi, Workstation, and Fusion allows privileged guest OS users to execute host code. The virtual USB 2.0 controller writes beyond a heap buffer while handling guest-controlled EHCI operations, corrupting memory in the host VMX process. Administrative privileges inside a virtual machine are required; ESXi confines execution to the VMX sandbox, while Workstation and Fusion expose the host system.
