Process crash via zero AIFF channel denominator
Published May 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Divide-by-zero in SoX 14.4.2 allows local users to crash the process by converting a crafted AIFF file to AIFF output. The lsx_aiffstartwrite function divides a fixed maximum byte count by bytes per sample times the attacker-controlled channel count without rejecting a value that makes the denominator zero. Exploitation requires a user or application to process the crafted file and select AIFF output; the failure terminates only the SoX process, with no reported data disclosure or modification.
