CVE-2022-31645

SMM code execution via nested-buffer size validation

Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Dec 30, 2024

Out-of-bounds write in the system BIOS of certain HP PCs allows local privileged users to execute arbitrary code in SMM. The SMI handler validates a nested pointer from its communication buffer but fails to constrain the pointed buffer's size, partially bypassing validation and corrupting SMM memory. High local privileges are required to invoke the firmware path; exploitation can establish firmware-level persistence or interrupt the device.
