CVE-2022-31641

SMM code execution via unchecked protocol pointer

Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Dec 30, 2024

Improper input validation in HP PC BIOS allows local users with kernel privileges to execute arbitrary code in System Management Mode. A child software SMI handler trusts attacker-controlled communication-buffer state, then calls an overwriteable Boot Services LocateProtocol pointer without ensuring execution remains within SMRAM. Exploitation requires local ring-0 code and permits ring-minus-2 execution that can bypass firmware write protections and support a persistent BIOS implant.
