Root privilege escalation via sybctrl symlink following
Published Jun 14, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise kernel 7.22, 7.49, and 7.53 allows local users to gain root privileges. The SUID-root sybctrl utility follows a user-created dev_sybctrl symbolic link when appending error text, allowing a chosen file to be modified as root. Membership in the sapsys group is required; redirecting the log to /etc/passwd permits creation of a root account.
