Application execution via missing quarantine attribute
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Gatekeeper bypass in Mozilla Thunderbird before 102.3 allows remote attackers to deliver applications that launch without a warning on macOS. The macOS application bundle omitted LSFileQuarantineEnabled from Info.plist, so saved attachments lacked the com.apple.quarantine attribute required for Gatekeeper checks. A user must save or open an application attachment and then choose to run it; the application then executes without signature or notarization enforcement.
