SYSTEM code execution via service executable replacement
Published Aug 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Local privilege escalation in GOG Galaxy 2.0.46 through 2.0.51 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM. The installer leaves its user as owner of the %ProgramData%\GOG.com parent folders, allowing the Galaxy directory to be renamed and rebuilt around an attacker-supplied GalaxyCommunication.exe. An account associated with the installation can start the service after replacing the executable and gains full SYSTEM control without administrator privileges.
