Privilege escalation via empty group reference resolution
Published Sep 7, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
Privilege escalation in affected XWiki Platform releases allows remote authenticated users to gain assigned rights through malformed group values. The object editor appends an empty group value to XWikiRights, and group resolution treats it as XWiki.WebHome, which becomes a privilege-bearing group when given an XWikiGroup object. Exploitation requires edit access to XWiki.WebHome, which is protected by default, and grants the rights assigned to affected users.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
