Full REST API access via DNS rebinding
Published Sep 7, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
DNS rebinding in ActivityWatch before 0.12.0b2 allows remote attackers to access its local REST API through a victim's browser. The bundled aw-server and aw-server-rust services accept API requests for attacker-controlled Host values instead of restricting the Host header to loopback or configured server names. A victim must visit attacker-controlled web content while ActivityWatch is running; the attacker can then read, write, or delete locally stored activity data.
