Application hang via quadratic RFC 2822 parsing
Published Jul 6, 2022 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Regular expression denial of service in Moment.js 2.18.0 through 2.29.3 allows attackers to hang applications via crafted date strings. The preprocessRFC2822 function's legacy-comment removal regex repeatedly rescans unmatched opening parentheses, producing quadratic CPU work. Exposure requires an application to pass attacker-controlled strings without length checks to the default Moment constructor, and the resulting event-loop blockage interrupts that application.
