CVE-2022-31119Network attack vector

Account takeover via plaintext passwords in exception logs

Published Aug 4, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Cleartext credential storage in Nextcloud Mail before 1.12.1 allows attackers with log access to obtain IMAP account passwords. When initial account setup fails, an AccountsController exception trace writes its call arguments, including plaintext IMAP and SMTP passwords, to nextcloud.log. Access to that log is required; an exposed password grants the associated IMAP account and also grants the Nextcloud account when credentials are reused.
