System crash via unchecked statistics allocation
Published Dec 14, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
NULL pointer dereference in the Linux Kernel through 5.16-rc6 allows local users to crash the kernel through Hyper-V ethtool statistics. netvsc_get_ethtool_stats in drivers/net/hyperv/netvsc_drv.c passes an unchecked kvmalloc_array result to statistics processing and per-CPU indexing after allocation failure. A local low-privileged user must request statistics on a Hyper-V netvsc interface while the allocation fails; the bounded impact is a kernel crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
