Local kernel crash via unchecked allocation failure
Published Dec 14, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
NULL pointer dereference in Linux Kernel 5.16-rc6 allows local users to crash the kernel through RDMA uverbs initialization. The uapi_finalize function iterates over memory returned by kmalloc_array without checking for allocation failure, dereferencing NULL if allocation fails. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and can interrupt the host rather than read or alter data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
