CVE-2022-31012

Elevated code execution via untrusted git.exe lookup

Published Jul 12, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Untrusted search path handling in Git for Windows before 2.37.1 allows local users to execute code via a planted git.exe. During a fresh installation, the elevated installer resolves and runs C:\mingw64\bin\git.exe from a location that authenticated users can create. A local authenticated user must plant the binary before another user starts a fresh installation, after which the binary runs with installer privileges.
